worm gear

Worm gears are commonly used to transfer power between portions of a device. The screw part of the worm gear is called a worm, and it rotates around a circular gear known as the wheel worm. Turning the worm gear thus turns the round gear as well. This turning is usually at a right angle, and therefore ideal for slow moving machines that require high power. Which means worm gears find a way into apps that needs electricity and precision.

Worm does produce high twisting power, or torque. Machines are helped at doing heavy task by a torque. The reason for this powerful twisting power is the distinctive form of the worm. On the other hand, worm gears exert a great deal of friction in addition to being strong. Friction provides the opposition that makes movement of the parts against each other much less easy. In some cases, worm gears can become hot and wear out prematurely when they are not maintained properly.

Which One is Better?

Gears are also expensive and although not cost prohibitive, the less you can afford to spend on them is a good thing. For instance, the worm gears are ideal for applications that require a high level of power and low speed such as conveyor belts or elevators. The task of these machines is a meticulous one, and for just that kind of functioning worm gears come much helpful.

Then there are other gears such as spur and helical which you can use for when the speed is more important than power. For example, if you want a device to rotate as quickly as possible - say for an exhaust fan or a power drill capable of incredible speeds - then you might opt for the simplest and most efficient type of gear out there; the spur gear. If you are looking for something that can handle heavy loads without jerking, then helical gears is the best way to make your machine noiseless and effective.
